The Communion Cake

Here it is, the finished communion cake. It worked out quite well and the communion girl seemed pleased with the result. I learned a lot doing this, not least the fact that you don’t decorate a cake with a two year old in the same room!

I think the most fiddly part was the lettering but I can see how with practice that would get easier. I would like to try a sugarpaste ribbon and bow too instead of the fabric one. It would be more work but I think would set it off nicely.

By far the best thing I learned while¬†making this cake was how effective using negative space can be. This technique is so versatile and I think I’ll be seeing lots of it in my future. I’m thinking tiny hearts making a heart shape for an anniversary dinner, or Christmas baubles outlining a Christmas Tree? Time will tell.
